Bridges in New Brunswick undergo regular inspections at intervals of one, two or four years, depending on their age and condition. Provincial bridge inspectors conduct these inspections to ensure the safety of the public. They examine many different components when inspecting a structure to assess its overall condition and determine whether repairs or maintenance are needed.

During inspections, information is collected on each bridge component to generate a bridge condition index (BCI). The index does not represent a structure's safety, but it helps the department understand the bridge inventory and is just one of the methods used to see what structures may need repairs, maintenance, or replacement.

The bridge condition index is a number from 0 to 100, where 100 is excellent. Some structures have a low index but it is important to note that if a structure is deemed unsafe action will immediately be taken by the department to remedy the situation which could include closing the structure.
