Mandatory entry-level training (MELT)

Transport truck drivers in New Brunswick who are seeking a Class 1 licence are required to take an approved training program, known as mandatory entry-level training (MELT).

Overview

This Canada-wide initiative adopts the training standards consistent with the National Safety Code which will ensure transport truck drivers in New Brunswick receive the same instruction as in other Canadian jurisdictions.

The program includes at least 112 hours of standardized instruction that covers the essential knowledge and skills needed to safely operate a large truck and will include:

  • classroom training
  • in-yard training
  • standardized practical training
  • airbrake component

Training programs which meet the new requirements and have an approved curriculum, are available at several institutions across the province.

Drivers with an existing valid New Brunswick Class 1 licence issued before April 1, 2024, do not need to retest, and are not required to take mandatory entry-level training.
