Regulations, registration and insurance

Rules and requirements for drivers using all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. 

Regulations

  • a licence plate must be attached securely on the rear of the all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles
  • operators and passengers must wear a helmet
  • off-road vehicles must be equipped with at least:
    • amber lights or reflectors on both sides
    • one working headlight
    • rearview mirror mounted on the left side
    • red brake light in the rear
    • red taillight
    • if the off-road vehicle was equipped with turn signals when it was manufactured, they must be maintained and in working order
  • all-terrain vehicles using managed trails must have a trail pass securely attached and clearly visible. For snowmobiles, a trail pass must be attached to the bottom centre of the windshield (if no windshield, the pass must be attached on the left side of the front of the cowling)
  • all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles must be registered and insured each year
  • it is illegal to:
    • operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs 
    • operate a vehicle with a suspended driver’s licence

Safety training certificate:

Required if you are under 16 years old or are supervising youth operators

Trail passes:

Passes must be permanently attached and clearly visible for snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles using New Brunswick-managed trails.

Insurance

  • insurance is mandatory for all off-road vehicles operating on trails, except for dirt bikes and dune buggies
  • a proof of insurance must be carried when operating an off-road vehicle
  • snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles must be insured unless operated only on the owner's property by the owner
  • snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles must be covered by a motor vehicle liability insurance policy that includes first-party accident benefits and third-party liability insurance in an amount of no less than $200,000

Registration

Registration serves as a unique identifier for an off-road vehicle and is required for all types of off-road vehicles. 

Complete the Application for vehicle registration form (PDF 131 KB) and bring it to a Service New Brunswick office for processing. Transfers, renewals, replacement of certificates or decals, record searches and record copies can also be provided at SNB offices. Off-road vehicles must be registered annually; the fee is the same as the initial registration.

All off-road vehicles must be registered each year and display a valid licence plate. Always remember to carry your current registration card or a photocopy when operating your off-road vehicle.
