Tourist oriented directional signs

Different tourist oriented directional signs and their purpose.

Overview

The Tourist Oriented Directional (TOD) Signing Program is available to eligible tourism operators. TOD signs are a standard sign. They’re blue and white in colour, manufactured and installed by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure within the highway right-of-way. There are three categories of TOD signs and the eligibility and cost for these signs depends on the category of the sign.

Major highway

Major highway signs give motorists exit and service and attraction information about a tourism industry business. Specific criteria determine a business’s eligibility. This type of signage is only permitted on level I or level II controlled access highways and is installed within the right-of-way. Locations are determined by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, and these signs are only installed when available space allows since regulatory and guide signing take precedence.

Major highway signs are a standard format and colour with input from the business owner about the symbols to be used . Manufacture, installation and maintenance of the sign is coordinated by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure at cost to the business operator. Costs can range from approximately $7,000 to $15,000 per sign excluding maintenance and taxes.

This type of signage is allowed on any NB highway other than a level I or level II controlled access highway and is installed within the right-of-way . Locations are determined by THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE, and these signs are only installed when available space allows since Regulatory and Guide signing take precedence.

Secondary highway signs are a standard format and colour with input from the business owner about the symbols to be used . Manufacture, installation and maintenance of these signs is completed by THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE at a cost to the business operator. Costs are typically $600 plus tax per sign for manufacture and installation plus an annual maintenance fee of $100 plus tax per sign.

Fingerboard signs

These signs allow businesses already depicted by a service symbol tab on a Blue Stand-Alone (BSA) sign to provide additional information to the visitor. This program is linked to the BSA program and applies to tourism businesses. Fingerboard signs will usually be on the secondary roadway after the motorist has exited the main highway and within visibility of the end of the exit ramp. They are not installed on the same highway as the BSA.

This program is to be administered on a ‘first come first served’ basis with priority given to businesses that are greater than 5 km (but within 20 km) from the highway exit. A maximum of four businesses will be identified on a fingerboard sign panel. The cost per business is $200 plus an annual maintenance fee of $50.
