Saint John Harbour Bridge rehabilitation project

Including multiple phases from 2021 to 2028, this project aims to upgrade the bridge's structure, with completed rehabilitation work on the deck, expansion joints, bearings, waterproofing and paving.

Phases three and four are cost shared with the federal goverment.

Overview

The Saint John Harbour Bridge Rehabilitation Project will take place from 2021 to 2028. The multiphase rehabilitation project is broken down into four phases, with the first two completed.

Progress

Phase Status
1 - Phase 1 of the rehabilitation work included installing new waterproofing and asphalt surficing began in June 2021 and was completed in September 2023. Completed
2 - Phase 2 includes replacing the expansion joints and installing new waterproofing and asphalt surfacing. Work began in May 2022 and concluded in November 2023. Completed
3 - The contract was awarded, and work started in August 2023, with an anticipated completion date in the fall of 2025.

Ongoing
4A - Phase 4A includes deck rehabilitation of both ramps on the east end, with anticipated completion in the fall of 2025. During work on Phase 4A, the bridge ramps will be closed. Ongoing
4B - Phase 4B tender for underside bridge work was advertised in February 2025 and awarded in March 2025, with anticipated completion in 2026. The main bridge will have 20-minute intermittent closures as a result of lifting and lowering the bridge for bearing replacement. Ongoing
4C - Phase 4C tender for underside bridge work will be advertised in spring 2026, with anticipated completion in 2028. The main bridge will have temporary single lane closures in 2027 due pier repairs. The length of closures still to be determined. Ongoing
