Tobique River Bridge

The project includes multiple phases and aims to upgrade the bridge’s structure, with rehabilitation and replacement of the superstructure, full replacement of the south segment and realignment and replacement of the north approach bridge segment.

Overview

The Tobique River Bridge # 1 (Power Dam) is a 257m long bridge built in 1952 on top of hydro dam owned by NB Power located on Route 105. The bridge serves as a vital connection for the locals and businesses connecting Perth Andover and Grand Falls.

Due to severe deterioration, significant rehabilitation was identified, and it was decided to undertake a combination of rehabilitation and replacement in a phased manner.

Progress

Phase Status
1 - Replacement of superstructure and rehabilitation of gatehouse deck was completed in 2014. Completed
2 - Replacement of the full south segment was completed in 2018. Completed
3 - Tender to be advertised in 2025. This phase involves the complete removal of the existing superstructure and partial removal of the existing substructure of the northern approach spans from Pier 5 to the North abutment. The new superstructure will consist of a new two-lane deck and a steel barrier system. The project also includes realignment of approximately 600 metres of two-lane roadway constrained by the new north abutment and the intersection with Main Street on the Tobique First Nation.

Construction of the north abutment is scheduled during the spring of 2026 and final phase is anticipated to be complete in fall 2027, with the construction of the north segment bridge and the realignment of the north bound road.

During the Phase 3 of construction in summer 2027, the bridge will be closed to traffic for a period of approximately 16 weeks. A temporary single lane pedestrian detour structure will be constructed to maintain pedestrian access, and a shuttle service similar to what was provided in previous phases will be available for public.
