Community Adult Learning Program (CALP)

Literacy training is offered for the community and for those wishing to prepare for Canadian Adult Education Credential tests.

Overview

The program aims to improve literacy levels in the province by providing free training opportunities for adults in their own community.

Eligibility

This program is open to those who:

  • are 18 or older
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada
  • are a New Brunswick resident
  • are no longer in the public school system
  • have a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 6 for all four abilities (reading, speaking, writing and listening), if a newcomer
  • provide proof of CLB language proficiency level before entering a class, if a newcomer

Home-schooled individuals seeking to write a Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) test at 17 will need special permission/exemption. Even if an exemption is granted to write CAEC tests at 17, individuals may not enter CALP classes until 18.

Academic services

Adult learners can obtain instruction in English or French. Academic services for Levels 1 and 2 and CAEC preparation are accessible in 70 communities throughout the province.

Programs are customized for individual needs and testing provides accreditation for further study. Participants who complete the CAEC preparation component of the program may go on to write the CAEC tests.

The schedules are flexible and can be full or part-time. There are three delivery approaches:

  • In-class learning only: participants attend class in person with a teacher on a regular basis
  • Off-site learning only: participants work on learning materials (i.e., paper-based or electronic resources) off-site with regular contact with a teacher (e.g., telephone, email, video call or online chat)
  • Blended learning: a combination of in-class and off-site learning based on an agreed upon plan with the referral source or teacher
