Training and Skill Development (TSD)

This program provides grants to clients so they can receive training or access to educational programs, allowing them to return to work.

Overview

The Training and Skills Development (TSD) program provides funds to help clients receive training or education which will allow them to return quickly to work. Clients must have an employment action plan which identifies the necessary skill development. In some cases, participants in an apprenticeship program may be eligible for support.

Eligibility

A participant must have an employment action plan developed with an employment counselor who will determine eligibility based on program criteria. The training must be a required component of this plan and lead to sustainable employment.

The program duration is limited to:

  • a maximum of two consecutive years for a regular post-secondary training program
  • a maximum of one year for academic upgrading for Grade levels 7 to 9 and two consecutive years for Grade levels 10 to 12
  • a maximum of 16 weeks for Grade levels 5 to 6 and a maximum of 12 weeks for CAEC preparation
  • a maximum of three consecutive years for a co-operative training program

For people in an apprenticeship program:

If eligible for Employment Insurance through a Skilled Trades NB assessment, apprentices may be eligible for funding during technical training for travel, lodging, child care, books and laptop.

Apprentices may also be eligible for a tuition rebate once they have successfully completed a level of technical training and passed the exam. The rebate is $85 for every week of training.

The level of funding is determined by the employment counsellor and may cover a portion of tuition and books, as well as other training expenses
