Employer responsibilities

Learn about what is required by employers under the Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification Act.

Apprenticeship training

Employers play a key role in supporting apprentices and certified tradespeople in New Brunswick. Under the Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification Act, employers are responsible for:

  • hiring and registering apprentices in designated trades
  • providing supervised, on-the-job training that aligns with provincial standards
  • ensuring qualified journeypersons are available to mentor apprentices
  • maintaining accurate training records and reporting progress to Skilled Trades NB
  • supporting certification efforts, including exam preparation and access to technical training

These responsibilities help ensure apprentices gain the skills and experience needed to meet New Brunswick’s certification standards.

Compulsory Occupations — Trades where certification is legally required to work. Employers hiring for these trades must ensure that workers are either certified or registered apprentices working under the supervision of a certified journeyperson.
