Overview
Career Connected Learning is a province-wide approach that helps students prepare for transitions throughout school and beyond. It gives learners opportunities to discover their strengths, connect classroom learning to the real-world, and to create a Career Life Plan to guide their choices beyond high school. Policy 316B requires graduates to develop a documented career-life plan as a graduation requirement.
Career Connected Learning is important because it:
- bolsters well-being/mental health
- improves academic achievement
- increases student engagement and motivation
- develops competencies to successfully manage learning, work and transitions
- prepares learners for the workplaces of the future (skills economy)
- boosts social mobility
- improves employee engagement and productivity
- reduces unemployment
- strengthens economic growth
Structure
The framework contains three big ideas based on career readiness research:
- Exploring my potential career pathway: Critically investigating the labour market and career pathways that students can expect to find most fulfilling.
- Experiencing my potential career pathway: Learning about career pathways of interest by engaging in frequent and ongoing career-connected experiential learning.
- Thinking about potential career pathways: Developing an informed vision for the future linked to interests, preferences, values and abilities.
These three big ideas will inform the ongoing development of each learner’s Career Life Plan, which is required for all New Brunswick graduates.
Hopeful transitions
Hopeful transitions is a model accompanied by an online tool that supports the transition planning for each learner in grades 6-12. The online tool will provide resources, lessons, activities, interventions, checklists and guides.
MyBlueprint tool
The provincial Career Connected Learning tool, myBlueprint, is a comprehensive life planning and digital portfolio tool that is accessible to all learners, educators and their families. This platform supports documentation of accomplishments and learning through digital inventories and evidence. The many career/life planning features in myBlueprint, including digital portfolios are recommended for learners grades 6 to 12 and in documenting a Career Life Plan throughout grades 9 to 12.
With myBlueprint, you can:
- explore your interests, learning styles, and personality through six interactive career assessments designed for grades 6–12 and post-secondary learners
- plan your high school courses to meet graduation requirements and see how your choices connect to future opportunities
- set S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) and build an action plan to stay on track
- research and compare careers across Canada, including wages, education pathways, and employment trends
- explore post-secondary programs, apprenticeships, and training options across all pathways — university, college, trades, or directly to work
- build an interactive budget to develop financial literacy skills and prepare for life after high school
- create and export resumes and cover letters to highlight your experiences for school, scholarships, or job applications
- upload and share photos, files, videos, and reflections in multiple digital portfolios that showcase your learning and growth over time
