Land acknowledgement
We respectfully acknowledge that New Brunswick is situated on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Wolastoqey, Mi'kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati Nations since time immemorial and entrenched in the Peace & Friendship Treaties between the Nations of the Wabanaki Confederacy and the Crown. We seek to repair and rebuild meaningful relationships with Indigenous peoples and honour these lands which hold the hopes of future generations.
Overview
The Office of First Nation Education (OFNE) seeks to promote the academic success, personal well-being, citizenship and career preparedness of First Nation students in New Brunswick provincial schools. We also strive to educate the public at large about First Nation cultures, histories and current realities.
Our mission is to support student success and build understanding of Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqey, Peskotomuhkati, and other Indigenous cultures in New Brunswick schools.
The Office of First Nation Education is committed to advancing ReconciliACTION. This means taking real steps toward reconciliation in schools. Our work is guided by the Peace and Friendship Treaties of the Wabanaki Nations, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. We aim to include the knowledge, languages, and perspectives of the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqey, Peskotomuhkati and other Indigenous Nations in the New Brunswick school curriculum.
Responsibilities of the office
The Office of First Nation Education’s role includes developing Wabanaki language learning opportunities, incorporating First Nation content within the curriculum and providing experiential learning opportunities virtually and in person.
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development has signed memoranda of understanding with all First Nation communities in the province. These agreements address all aspects of preparing First Nation students for academic success.
The department also has signed a memorandum of understanding with several First Nation communities concerning the development of treaty education materials.
Finally, the department is engaged in the development of enhancement agreements with all First Nation communities in New Brunswick as well as with Listuguj First Nation in Quebec. These agreements ensure that specific funds are dedicated to the educational and social success of First Nation students.
The World of Wisdom
The World of Wisdom enables educators to connect learners with a Wabanaki Knowledge Keeper for teachings on a variety of topics. This service is especially important for parts of the province that are far from Wabanaki communities. The World of Wisdom also has a certified wellness instructor that educators can access for their personal growth.
