Overview
School buses are a regular part of the school day for many students in New Brunswick, whether they ride daily or occasionally for field trips or school events. Regardless of how often they take the bus, all students should be familiar with basic school bus safety.
Transportation services are managed by each school district and follow provincial safety standards and policies.
School bus safety guidelines
To help ensure a safe ride for everyone, students are expected to follow a few key rules:
- listen to the driver and avoid distractions while the bus is moving
- be respectful to the driver and fellow passengers
- arrive on time and wait at a safe distance from the road
- only approach the bus once it has come to a full stop
- cross safely by waiting for the driver’s signal and walking at least three metres in front of the bus, never behind it
- stay seated, face forward, and keep the aisle clear
- share your seat if needed
- keep belongings with you and out of the way
- ask the driver before opening windows or emergency exits
- stay silent at railway crossings
- no eating, drinking or tobacco use is allowed on the bus
- respect the bus- damaging the vehicle can result in consequences
These safety guidelines help protect everyone on board.
