 Project information

To get a better understanding of the project, an overview and project information is required. This is broken down by:

  • executive summary
  • what, how and why the project will happen
  • environmental innovation
  • map
  • prior and additional funding
  • requested funding
  • supporting documents

Note: Each field in this section has a character limit.

Executive summary

This brief section will introduce the proposal and summarize the key elements of the application. (2,000-character limit) The executive summary must be as brief as possible. It is meant to describe the major aspects of the proposed project. Please avoid including past accomplishments, group history, etc. in this section.

To complete the executive summary, include a brief overview of:

  • the problem or issue to be addressed
  • goals and objectives
  • key activities
  • expected results and benefits in quantifiable terms (if possible)
  • location of where the project will be carried out (if there is more than one location, each location should be indicated)
  • when the project will start and finish

What do you want to do?

Clearly outline the proposed activities and anticipated outcomes. Use concise language and bullet points to enhance clarity and focus. (4,000-character limit).

How do you plan to do it?

Provide a description of the project's phases or the activities to be undertaken, along with an approximate timeline. Specify roles and responsibilities if collaborating with another organization. (4,000-character limit).

Why do you want to do it?

Explain the environmental problem or current situation the project aims to address. Highlight how the project will bring about improvements and connect its objectives to relevant environmental frameworks or management plans (e.g., climate change action plans, New Brunswick water strategy). (4,000-character limit).

Environmental innovation

If applicable, describe how your project or method of carrying out your project demonstrates innovation. Describe what is new or original. How will it utilize new ideas, technology or implement new processes? (1,500-character limit)

For routine projects, e.g. ambient monitoring programs or multi-year projects (i.e. year two of five), innovative components are not necessary and their absence will not negatively impact the organization’s consideration for funding.

Map

Note: This section is not mandatory.

Please indicate where the project will take place. Add locations by clicking a general area on the map, zooming in and adjusting the positioning of the red dot to the approximate location.

Then click "Add Location." Include multiple locations, such as where the office is located as well as where fieldwork will take place.

Priority area measures

When completing the application, identify which priority area measure applies to the project. This should be selected from the drop-down menu in this section of the application.

If the project has measures not listed in the drop-down menu, select Other and provide a brief description of the proposed measure in the text box (4,000-character limit).

Please note that a maximum of two measures can be selected per application.

Prior funding

If you plan to submit additional requests to the Environmental Trust Fund for your project, please carefully consider whether your project falls under multi-year of recurring project. A multi-year project is a project that implements different phases over each year, building off of the previous year. A recurring project is a repeatable, ongoing project with similar activities happening annually.

Please include the following details in your application:

  • the number of years over which the project is to take place
  • budget required next year to continue the project activities

Briefly describe how the project will continue after the period of Environmental Trust Fund support has ended. For multi-year projects, describe how year 2 will build on year 1. For recurring projects, outline which activities will be repeated in year 2.

The review process can be fast-tracked if the organization has received funding in the past. If you are a part of a large organization with many branches and you are not familiar with prior funding within the organization, please limit the application to your mandate within the organization.

Full disclosure of all funding is required. Support from the fund may be used to complement existing federal, provincial and private programs. Having other sources of funding may enhance the likelihood of support as this reflects positively on the strength of the application and its alignment with other community and funding priorities.

Project proponents may be asked to seek alternate or supplementary funding through other sources. Should other sources of funding be confirmed after the project has been submitted, please notify the department.

Goodwill and in-kind contributions are not used to calculate the total cost of the project, but it is important to include this type of assistance, both in terms of its monetary value and as an indication of support for the application.

Requested funding

Only include the financial information for the one fiscal year (April 1 to March 31) in the same timeframe of the project or project phases if this is a multi-year project.

Include as much detail as possible and check the calculations to avoid delays in reviewing the application. Budget costing should present a breakdown of individual project costs. Avoid submitting lump sum estimates of project components.

Any prior costs incurred by the project will not be reimbursed.

Supporting documents

Supporting documents such as letters of support, maps, photos, appendices and more can be attached. The maximum document size is 10 MB each.

Tip: Letters of support demonstrate community awareness, support and involvement in the project. Should you receive letters of support after submitting the application, please notify us by forwarding the letter(s) to the [email protected] inbox to be added to the application.
