Overview
The harvest and growth of forests on Crown lands are guided by long-term forest management plans. These ensure that forestry activities are aligned with the long term social, economic and environmentally sustainable objectives set by the provincial government. The forest management plans consider forest growth and changes up to 80 years in the future and are updated every five years.
Goals
Key objectives were introduced to achieve healthy, resilient and sustainable forests including:
Conservation: Expanding conserved Crown forest from 23% to 30%, enhancing habitat protection and biodiversity efforts.
Water protection: Improving water management by focusing on water flow and cold-water inputs to study watershed resilience.
Wood supply: Boosting softwood harvest and reducing hardwood harvest to sustainable levels.
Silviculture: Replanting efforts on previously treated sites using climate-resilient seedlings to create a more productive forest without increasing herbicides.
Diversified use: Supporting economic diversification through maple syrup and blueberry production, biomass development and infrastructure improvements on Crown land.
Timber royalties: Creating a new pricing system linking Crown timber royalties to market conditions and directing a porting of revenue to support sustainable management of private woodlots.
