Overview
Freshwater aquaculture is regulated under the Water Quality Regulation of the Clean Environment Act. The Department of Environment and Local Government sets requirements for environmental monitoring, discharge limits, and industry compliance.
Applications are reviewed and certificates of approval are issued following site inspections and ongoing communication with operators to ensure environmentally sustainable practices.
Eligibility
A certificate of approval is required for all freshwater land-based aquaculture operations using tank or cage rearing methods with more than 2,500 kg of fish, and for all freshwater aquaculture facilities using pond rearing methods for the purpose of culturing more than 25,000 fish, regardless of total biomass.

Unless otherwise specified, Fees exclude the harmonized sales tax (HST).
