Overview
New Brunswick has approximately 2,500 lakes and 60,000 kilometers of streams and rivers. Many of the province’s rivers and lakes are monitored to assess background water quality, which includes natural waters, outside of the influence of point sources of pollutants.
Water Quality Data Portal
The portal includes data collected by the department and its partners since 2003 and is regularly updated.
Monitoring
This monitoring is led by the Department of Environment and Local Government, in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada, First Nation organizations and non-governmental organizations, including provincial watershed and volunteer lake associations.
The monitoring program has several goals:
- Monitor and report publicly on the water quality of major rivers and lakes.
- Provide reliable data to help with government assessments, planning and approvals.
- Contribute water quality data for the annual Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicator report, using the Water Quality Index from the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment.
