Direct-to-tenant rent benefit

The direct-to-tenant rent benefit is a shared funding initiative between the federal and provincial governments.

Program Update

The Direct-to-Tenant rental benefit and the Canada-New Brunswick Housing Benefit are not accepting new applications at this time.

While funding for this fiscal year has now been fully allocated, any applications already received will remain under review and will be considered if more funds become available.

If that happens, Housing NB will communicate that to the public, and could possibly re-open the application process.

Funding for this program is limited and was distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Overview

This benefit helps New Brunswickers who are struggling to afford rent. Individuals and families have additional costs for shelter, food, clothing, childcare, and transportation due to the rising costs of living. This benefit provides help with rent so participants can address these additional costs.

Eligibility

To qualify for the benefit, applicants must:

  • rent* the place where they live
  • not receive a subsidy from Housing NB**
  • live in New Brunswick
  • have filed their taxes for the previous year

For employed adults, under 65 and living alone, your income must be between $12,500 and $50,000 per year to qualify.

For those 65 years or older and for families (including single parents), the combined income of all adults over the age of 19 living in the home must be less than $58,000 annually (before tax) to qualify.

*Please note that the place rented must include a sleeping area, living area, kitchen and bathroom that are located entirely within the rented premises and are not shared with anyone outside of the household. Single room occupancy housing such as rooming houses, boarding houses and dorms are not eligible.

**Receiving the benefit does not exclude you from receiving other benefits or supports from Social Development or Housing NB.
