Apply for an adjustment due to damage or destruction

If your property was significantly damaged or destroyed this year or last year, you may qualify for a property tax adjustment. The damage must be caused by a sudden event or one that happened over a short period of time. Damage from neglect or abandonment does not qualify.

You can apply if your property meets these criteria:

• The property has been significantly damaged or destroyed.
• The damage was caused by a sudden event or one that happened over a short period of time.
• The damage or destruction happened in the current tax year, or previous one.

Eligible applicants will receive a property tax adjustment based on the assessed value of the damage as determined by Service New Brunswick (SNB).

Make sure you have:

• Proof of property damage or destruction, such as documentation from your insurance provider.

1. Download the application form or get a copy at your nearest SNB Service Center.  If your insurer has provided proof of loss documentation, you will automatically receive an application form.
2. Complete the form and submit it following the instructions.

Once your application is approved, Service New Brunswick (SNB) will assess the value of the damage, and your property tax adjustment will be calculated.

If the adjustment creates a credit, you can:

• Use it as a pre-payment for future taxes
• Request a refund in writing

If there is still an outstanding balance after the adjustment, you will receive a revised tax statement showing the new amount due.
