Age-friendly communities

Communities that have taken on age-friendly initiatives to be recognized as age friendly.

Overview

The New Brunswick Age-Friendly Community Recognition Program is a way of encouraging communities and municipalities across the province to create policies, services and structures that promote healthy aging and wellness.

The Age-Friendly Community movement encourages healthy aging and wellness under the following eight areas:

  • outdoor spaces and buildings
  • transportation
  • housing
  • social participation
  • respect and social inclusion
  • civic participation and employment
  • communication and information
  • community support and health services

By setting up policies, services and structures that support healthy aging and wellbeing, communities can help people to live in secure, healthy environments.

Eligibility

The program recognizes those municipalities and communities that have completed the first four steps based on the World Health Organization’s framework to become Age-Friendly:

  • secure official commitment to the age-friendly community approach with a resolution from the municipal council
  • establish an Age-Friendly Steering Committee
  • conduct an age-friendly community assessment
  • establish a comprehensive action plan

Once the above four steps are complete, a community may apply to be recognized as being age friendly.

The documents that must be included as part of the application include:

  • Application — Age Friendly Community Recognition Program (PDF 116 KB)
  • a municipal resolution that supports the commitment to become an age-friendly community
  • a Terms of Reference for the established steering committee
  • the results of the community needs assessment
  • a three-year action plan
  • a one-page summary of the steps and initiatives undertaken by the community in working towards becoming age-friendly

An Application Assessment Team will review the application and notify the community of the decision. The process can take between eight and ten weeks to complete.

To maintain the age friendly community recognition status, communities will need to show evidence of continued effort. Therefore, every five years the community must submit an application to the Department of Social Development to demonstrate the continued commitment to being age friendly.
