Eastern Charlotte

Eastern Charlotte was officially incorporated on January 1, 2023. The newly formed municipality encompasses approximately 8,000 residents and, according to 2021 data from Statistics Canada, 22% of the population is aged 65 and older.

In May 2023, Eastern Charlotte formally initiated its journey toward becoming a provincially recognized Age-Friendly Community by passing a municipal resolution. A foundational step in this process was the establishment of the Eastern Charlotte Age Friendly Community Advisory Committee, which was completed in March 2024. The Committee comprises of two municipal councilors and six public members, representing a diverse range of ages, organizations, and community interests.

The Committee undertook a comprehensive community assessment, analyzing current infrastructure, demographic trends, and the availability of programs and services. This assessment identified key challenges and opportunities for enhancing age-friendliness across the municipality. Throughout 2024, the Committee facilitated a series of consultations, including a community-wide survey, participation in senior-focused events and expositions, and a dedicated focus group. The resulting data was shared with residents, reinforcing the Committee’s commitment to transparency and community-driven planning.

Working collaboratively with local partners, the Committee began developing both short-term and long-term strategies. Based on the findings, three priority domains were identified for targeted improvement: Transportation, Outdoor Spaces and Buildings, and Community Support & Health Services. This collaborative process has already fostered meaningful partnerships with organizations such as Nursing Home Without Walls, Fundy High School, the Community Centre, and Community Meals.

Key initiatives include:

• The acquisition of a wheelchair-accessible bus/van to serve the broader region.
• Outdoor accessibility will be enhanced through the installation of public washroom signage in St. George and Blacks Harbour.
• Community support efforts encompass a range of programs, including mental health workshops, weekly community meals and socials, intergenerational events, and a Puzzle & Book Exchange.
• A major emergency preparedness initiative will see the distribution of magnetic plastic envelope kits to all 8,000 households, beginning with seniors, in containing emergency contact numbers and medication summaries.

The Committee also plays a key role in working with Council to communicate, promote, and launch the Age Friendly Community Plan. This includes ensuring that residents, stakeholders, and government partners are informed of the plan’s initiatives, progress, and opportunities. The inclusion of older adults from multiple wards ensures that outreach remains inclusive and representative of the community’s diverse perspectives.

Since its incorporation, Eastern Charlotte has demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and a deep respect for the lived experiences of older adults and all residents. Its age-friendly journey reflects a thoughtful and sustained commitment to building a community where all citizens can age with dignity, connection, and purpose.
