Overview
- The Official Age-Friendly Resolution was passed in August 2018.
- The Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee was established in November and held its first meeting on November 28, 2018.
- The Age-Friendly Community Survey was available to the Oromocto and Surrounding Area in May, June and July 2019. Committee members also distributed the surveys at meetings of the local seniors’ clubs and the library’s Browse & Brunch program (for those 60+).
- The Age-Friendly Community Action Plan was created based on survey results and approved by Town Council on 21 November 2019.
Some of the highlights of the action plan items include:
- work with the Oromocto Chamber of Commerce to encourage businesses to become more senior friendly; better promote job/volunteer opportunities geared towards seniors; and to assist with the creation of a listing of businesses that provide affordable and reliable repairs and services to seniors
- continue to work with developers on increasing affordable, senior-friendly housing options including rental opportunities
- explore transportation options including additional taxis and ride-sharing services that are accessible and offer seniors discounts
- improve communication and promotion of job/ volunteer opportunities, programs and services available for seniors including the creation of an informational directory
- host a Seniors Wellness Fair Install more benches along AT routes must used by seniors Install senior-friendly outdoor exercise equipment
- continue to offer low-cost senior programming, the 55+ Summer Club and subsidized/no-cost use of facilities for senior clubs/ groups
- encourage intergenerational activities and approach local youth and adult organizations to include, promote and offer training for older adult volunteers
