Seniors and Long-Term Care Plan for New Brunswick

A clear and concrete vision for supporting seniors and their families throughout New Brunswick

Overview

The provincial Seniors and Long-Term Care Plan sets out a bold vision for the future: a system that is integrated, person-centred, and equitable; one that supports seniors in their homes, communities, and care facilities, while recognizing the vital role of families, caregivers, and communities. It is a plan that embraces innovation, partnership, and inclusion, ensuring that no one’s needs are overlooked and that every senior has the opportunity to thrive.

This plan reflects a shared commitment across government, community organizations, and educational institutions. Its success will depend on the strength of these partnerships and on the engagement of all New Brunswickers. Together, we can build a care system that is responsive to the realities of today and prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.

Guiding principles

The vision of the strategy is to establish a coordinated system of care that provides a range of home, community, and residential supports and services, enabling New Brunswickers to live with dignity, safety, autonomy, and connection at every stage of aging.

Person-centred: The entire continuum of care should be flexible and adaptable to individual needs, culture and language preferences, and promote dignity, safety, and autonomy.

Accessible: People should get the services they need, when they need them, through a system that is easy to navigate.

Affordable: People should be able to afford the services they need.

High-quality: People should be satisfied with the quality and appropriateness of long-term care services that are provided by government, service providers, and community partners.

Collaborative: We should strive to achieve better outcomes by leveraging partnerships and collective approaches to offering long-term care services.

Priority areas

Each area focuses on targeted actions and measurable outcomes that address immediate challenges while building a sustainable, connected, and person-centered system for the future. Together, they form the foundation for ensuring seniors in New Brunswick can live well, remain independent, and receive the care and support they need when and where they need it.

  • Stronger and supported workforce
  • Strengthen community, family and caregiver supports
  • Aging well at home
  • Aging well in residential long-term care

Together, these priorities create a balanced approach that combines concrete short-term actions with a long-term vision for the well-being of seniors throughout New Brunswick.

Monitoring and reporting

To ensure the Plan’s success, the following monitoring and reporting mechanisms will be followed:

  • Monthly internal monitoring: A steering committee of senior officials will be established to track progress and provide monthly updates to the Deputy Minister and Minister. This will be used to adjust timelines, shift resources, or refine initiatives, as needed.
  • Quarterly advisory body updates: An advisory body to the Minister of Seniors will be appointed to receive quarterly updates and provide advice on the Plan’s progress. This may include the development of issue-specific task teams established to help resolve operational and communication issues.
  • Public reporting: To ensure complete transparency, annual updates on the measures will be released by the Minister of Seniors. These will be plain-language summaries of goals, progress, and areas requiring attention.

At the same time, we acknowledge that this plan is not the end of the work. System transformation does not happen overnight. Meaningful change requires partnership, accountability and sustained commitment over several years. This document sets the direction, priorities, and measures that will guide us, but it is implementation that will determine success.
