Civil officiants

A civil officiant may solemnize civil marriage ceremonies throughout the province.

Overview

In New Brunswick a marriage may be solemnized by either a cleric (religious officiant) registered under the Marriage Act or by a civil officiant, who may solemnize civil marriage ceremonies.

Eligibility

Members of the Law Society of New Brunswick who in current standing may become a civil officiant.

Applicants should determine their eligibility as per the Marriage Act, complete the online application form and pay the fee. Their notification of their civil officiant number will be sent by email. Hard copy registration forms will be sent by regular mail. Additional hard copies of marriage registration forms may be ordered by calling 506-453-2385.

The applicant’s name will be posted on the Service New Brunswick civil officiant list (publication) if they have selected this option upon application.

One-year appointment $100
Yearly renewal $100
Expedited processing of an application for appointment or renewal $50
