Overview
Substance use and/or gambling concerns can be defined as an ongoing use of addictive substances such as alcohol, cannabis or opioids, among others, as well as continuing to engage in behaviors that may be harmful to the individual.
When someone spends most of their time, energy and money on their substance use or gambling activities rather than engaging with family or friends or fulfilling regular responsibilities, they might be experiencing issues with substance use or gambling.
In New Brunswick, Addiction and Mental Health Services are provided by the Réseau de Santé Vitalité and Horizon Health Network. There are eight Addiction Services centres within the province, with professionals to guide people impacted by gambling and/or substance use in their recovery journey.
Services available include open access one-at-a-time therapy, withdrawal management services, outpatient supportive counselling and Addiction Medicine Services for opioids and alcohol use disorders.
Each Health Network provides a live-in treatment service designed to help people with mental health, substance use and gambling related concerns. These are located in Campbellton (Vitalité) and Saint John (Horizon), but are available to everyone in the province. Services include group and individual therapy and focus on helping the individual develop skills in preventing substance use or harmful gambling and self-management.
