Using respite care to support primary caregivers

Information and resources regarding respite care.

Overview

Respite care provides short-term relief to the primary caregiver while ensuring the well-being of the person living with dementia. This allows caregivers to prevent burnout by focusing on their own mental and physical health.

Below are some options for respite care.

Adult Day Centres

An Adult Day Centre provides short-term support, activities, and supervision for adults who require assistance with daily living.

Review the list of Adult Day Centres that are contracted by the Department of Social Development. You can either apply directly to the centre or through the Long-Term Care Program.

Centres Home support services

Having a professional come into the home can sometimes be more comfortable for the person living with dementia. Home support services can help with daily activities such as personal care (examples: feeding, grooming, bathing), housekeeping and meal preparation.
