Eligibility for the New Brunswick Prescription Drug Program

Individuals who reside in an adult residential facility are eligible for drug coverage through this plan. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Social Development. 

There are no fees or co-payments associated with this plan.

• Long-Term Care Services for Seniors

Children in care of the Minister of Social Development and special needs children are eligible for drug coverage through this plan. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Social Development. 

There are no fees or co-payments associated with this plan.

Individuals incarcerated in provincial correctional facilities who do not have existing drug coverage are eligible for drug coverage through this plan. Eligibility is determined at the facility.

There are no fees or co-payments associated with this program.

Individuals who have been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis may apply for either of the following public drug plans if they do not have coverage for any portion of the cost of cystic fibrosis drugs from any other drug plan. 

Cystic Fibrosis Plan

The Cystic Fibrosis Plan covers certain cystic fibrosis drugs. Prior to registration, please call 1-800-332-3692 to confirm that the prescribed drug is covered under the plan.

There is an annual premium of $50 and a co-payment per prescription. The co-payment is 20% of the prescription cost, up to a maximum of $20. There is a maximum co-payment amount of $500 per family unit per plan year (July 1 to June 30). Individuals under the age of 19, diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency, may apply for either of the following public drug plans if they do not have coverage for any portion of the cost of growth hormone drugs from any other drug plan.

Growth Hormone Deficiency Plan

The Growth Hormone Deficiency Plan covers certain growth hormone drugs. Prior to registration, please call 1-800-332-3692 to confirm that the prescribed drug is covered under the plan.

There is an annual premium of $50 and a co-payment per prescription. The co-payment is 20% of the prescription cost, up to a maximum of $20. There is a maximum co-payment amount of $500 per family unit per year (July 1 to June 30).

New Brunswick Drug Plan

The New Brunswick Drug Plan covers a broad range of drugs, including growth hormone drugs. The premium and maximum co-payment amounts for the New Brunswick Drug Plan are based on annual family income.

Individuals diagnosed with HIV infection and who have been registered in the plan by a physician are eligible for coverage of certain antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV/AIDS. 

If the applicant has existing drug coverage with another drug plan, the applicant must submit a letter from their existing drug plan confirming that the required drugs are not listed on the plan’s formulary.

The HIV/AIDS Plan has an annual registration fee of $50 and a co-payment. The co-payment is 20% of the prescription cost, up to a maximum of $20. The co-payment ceiling is $500 per family unit, per plan year (July 1 to June 30). 

Individuals who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis may apply for either of the following public drug plans if they do not have coverage for any portion of the cost of multiple sclerosis drugs from any other drug plan. 

Multiple Sclerosis Plan

The Multiple Sclerosis Plan covers certain multiple sclerosis drugs. Prior to registration, please call 1-800-332-3692 to confirm that the prescribed drug is covered under the plan.

• Licensed Nursing Homes

Individuals who have received a solid organ or bone marrow transplant may apply for either of the following public drug plans if they do not have coverage for any portion of the cost of anti-rejection drugs from any other drug plan. 

Organ Transplant Plan

The Organ Transplant Plan covers certain anti-rejection drugs. Prior to registration, please call 1-800-332-3692 to confirm that the prescribed drug is covered under the plan.

The Organ Transplant Plan has an annual premium of $50 and a co-payment per prescription. The co-payment is 20% of the prescription cost, up to a maximum of $20. There is a maximum co-payment amount of $500 per family unit per plan year (July 1 to June 30).

New Brunswick Drug Plan

Various plans offer prescription drug coverage to seniors in the province. Seniors who receive the Federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) are eligible for coverage by the New Brunswick Prescription Drug Program (NBPDP) – Seniors plan. 

Seniors who do not receive the Federal GIS from ESDC can apply for the New Brunswick Drug Plan, an income-based plan that covers uninsured New Brunswickers.

NBPDP Seniors plan

New Brunswick seniors are eligible to apply for drug coverage if they:

• are 65 years of age or older
• are a permanent resident of New Brunswick
• have a valid New Brunswick Medicare card
• do not have prescription drug coverage from another plan

The Application Package (PDF 1.2 MB), which includes the Seniors Drug Plan Application Form (PDF 613 KB), is automatically sent to every New Brunswick resident 60 days before they turn 65.

Individuals who hold a valid health card issued by the Department of Social Development are eligible for drug coverage through this plan. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Social Development.

Individuals on this plan are required to pay a co-payment of $4.00 for each prescription for adults (18 years of age and over) and $2.00 for children (under 18 years of age), up to a maximum of $250 per family unit in a fiscal year.
