Overview, institutions and statistics (adult custody services)
The Adult Custody Services branch of the Department of Justice and Public Safety is responsible for programs and operations related to the province’s four regional correctional institutions for adult male clients, the New Brunswick Women’s Correctional Centre and a Community Residential Centre.
The branch has jurisdiction over clients 18 and over who are:
- sentenced to terms of imprisonment of two years less a day
- adults on remand, awaiting trial or sentencing

A general guide is written for use by persons sentenced, remanded, or detained in Provincial Adult Custody facilities within the province of New Brunswick.

Temporary Absence program
The Temporary Absence program allows the temporary release of adult offenders from custody to meet medical, administrative or humanitarian goals. There are four kinds of temporary absence.
One day: Permits the absence of an offender for less than 24 hours.
Daily: The offender must return to the correctional institution each day.
Full: The offender does not have to return to the institution until the completion of the temporary absence or its revocation.
Medical: An offender may be released for an undetermined time for medical reasons.
