Salvage dealers

A business or person who owns or operates a salvage yard in the province, for the purpose of buying or selling salvage, must have a Salvage Dealer Licence.

Overview

Anyone that operates a salvage yard for the purpose of reselling or purchasing salvage must obtain a licence as issued by the Department of Justice and Public Safety. This includes second-hand, used, discarded or surplus metals; goods or articles of every description; unserviceable, discarded or junked motor vehicles; bodies, engines or other component parts of a motor vehicle, but does not include bottles, furniture or books.

This licence does not allow a person to sell motor vehicle parts except as salvage. 

Eligibility

A business applying for a licence to operate as a salvage dealer must have:

  • a completed application (PDF 571 KB)
  • a licence fee of $150
  • a fire safety plan and site layout approved by the Office of the Fire Marshal
  • written confirmation from the Local Planning Commission or municipal office having authority over the type of activity 
  • written approval from the zoning authority, municipal or provincial
  • written documentation from an Inspector with the Department of Environment, advising that the site meets the requirements under the Unsightly Premises Act 
  • the business registered with Corporate Registry located at Service New Brunswick.
  • a business office in the province
