Overview
All electrical construction and maintenance work must be conducted by New Brunswick licenced electricians or supervised apprentices. There are eight types of electrician licences.
Eligibility
An Electrician Licence is required to make, repair or maintain electrical installations. To qualify, applicants must hold a New Brunswick Certificate of Qualification.
An Industrial Electrician Licence is required to make, repair or maintain electrical installations in establishments where electricians are permanently employed. To qualify, applicants must hold a New Brunswick Certificate of Qualification.
An Electrical Contractor Licence is required to obtain electrical wiring permits and to carry out an electrical installation. To qualify, applicants must hold a Class 3 New Brunswick Electrician's Licence and have two years of experience as an electrician or must employ a person with those qualifications.
A Sign Installer Contractor Licence is required to obtain sign installation permits and to carry out sign installation work. To qualify, applicants must employ someone with a valid New Brunswick Sign Installer Licence.
A Sign Installer Licence is required to perform sign installation work. To qualify, applicants must complete a course which is satisfactory to the chief inspector, must obtain 2,000 documented hours of sign installation work and must complete a competency test which is acceptable to the chief inspector.
A Sign Installer Helper Licence is required to perform sign installation work. To qualify, applicants must be employed by a sign installer contractor or an electrical contractor.
A Lightning Protection System Agent Licence is required to dispose of, install, alter or maintain a lightning protection system. To qualify, applicants must be appointed by a licenced supplier, be a resident of the province and must satisfy the chief electrical inspector that they are qualified.
A Lightning Protection System Supplier Licence is required to dispose of, install, alter or maintain a lightning protection system. To qualify, applicants must register by affidavit, with the chief electrical inspector, that all equipment for the installation of lightning protections systems conform to the requirements of the Installation Code for Lightning Protection Systems.
