Learn about the eight types of gas business licences and work they allow.

Overview

Gas business licences are required for the storing, distributing, installing, repairing, servicing, selling and maintaining gas burning appliances and piping.

Eligibility

To qualify for a Gas Bulk Plant Licence, applicants must employ or hold (G1 or G1-L or A4 or A2 or A1 or G2 or G2-L) and/or a PPO-1, PTO-1 or PTO-2.

To qualify for a Gas Distribution Licence, applicants must employ or hold PPO-1 or PPO-2.

To qualify for a Gas Dispenser Licence, applicants must employ or hold PPO-1 or PPO-2.

No qualifications are required for a Gas Cylinder Exchange Licence.

To qualify for a Gas Installation Contractor Licence, applicants must employ or hold G2 or G2-L or A1 or A2 or A4 or G1 or G1-L.

To qualify for a Gas Piping Contractor Licence, applicants must employ or hold GP or A3 or A1 or A2 or A4 or G2 or G2-L or G1 or G1-L (A1 or A2 or A4 or G2 or G2-L installation must be within Btu limitations).

To qualify for a Gas Service Contractor Licence, applicants must employ or hold A1 or A2 or A4 or G2 or G2-L or G1 or G1-L or DAT or RVT.

To qualify for a Medical Gas Piping Contractor Licence, applicants must employ a Class F Medical Gas Installer licence holder and a Class G Medical Gas Verifier Licence, holder and possess a valid registered Quality Control Manual and Registered Brazing Procedure.

Authorized work

A Gas Bulk Plant Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of operating a gas bulk plant for filling cylinders, vehicle fuel tanks, transport tanks and other approved containers. It is also for the purpose of performing any activity authorized by the following class of licence: Gas Distribution Licence, Gas Dispenser Licence, Gas Cylinder Exchange Licence, Gas Installation Contractor Licence, Gas Piping Contractor Licence and Gas Service Contractor Licence.

A Gas Distribution Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of filling and distributing gas by means of cylinders which have a capacity not exceeding one hundred pounds (forty-five kilograms) of gas.

A Gas Dispenser Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of operating a gas dispensing unit to fill containers which are permanently mounted on mobile vehicles or to fill cylinders which have a capacity not exceeding sixty pounds (twenty-seven kilograms) of gas.

A Gas Cylinder Exchange Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of operating a cylinder exchange program for cylinders which have a capacity not exceeding twenty pounds (nine kilograms) of gas.

A Gas Installation Contractor Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of installing, repairing, servicing and maintaining gas appliances and equipment.

A Gas Piping Contractor Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of installing gas piping systems, but not including the installation, service or repair of appliances, cylinders or tanks, or the connection of gas piping systems to the source of supply or appliances.

A Gas Service Contractor Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of servicing gas equipment.

A Medical Gas Piping Contractor Licence is required to establish a business for the purpose of installing and repairing non-flammable medical gas piping systems.
