Plumbing inspections

Inspections are required for all new, altered or repaired plumbing systems.

Overview

Any plumbing system that has been installed, extended, altered, renewed or repaired by a plumbing contractor or owner-occupant may be inspected to ensure it meets minimum safety standards.

Plumbing inspections are carried out to ensure compliance with the requirements of the National Plumbing Code of Canada (2020).

Eligibility

Anyone can make a written request to the chief plumbing inspector for a special inspection of a plumbing system.

Owners of buildings with testable backflow prevention devices are responsible for having the devices tested annually by someone who holds a provincial backflow prevention device tester’s licence.

Provincial inspections are carried out on an auditing basis according to risk priority. Specific requests for inspections are subject to availability and may be subject to special inspection fees. The cities of Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John carry out their own inspections.

Tests on backflow prevention devices are conducted on installation or repair of the device and annually thereafter.
