Welder’s certificate

Overview

A welder’s certificate is required to carry out any welding activities. There are four classifications of welder’s certificate: Class B Welder's Certificate, Approved Welder's Certificate, Qualified Welder's Certificate and Special Welder's Certificate.

Eligibility

To obtain a Class B Welder's Certificate, applicants must have one year of experience in the welding trade or must complete an approved welder's course and pass a qualification test. This certificate authorizes the holder to carry out the fabrication and repair of structures other than boilers, pressure vessels or pressure piping systems. 

To obtain an Approved Welder's Certificate, applicants must have one year of experience in the welding trade, plus at least six months of experience on pressure piping, or must complete an approved welder's course, and pass a qualification test. This certificate authorizes the holder to carry out the fabrication and repair of boilers and pressure vessels and pressure piping systems having a maximum design pressure of 160 psi. 

To obtain a Qualified Welder's Certificate, applicants must have two years of experience in the welding trade with at least one year of experience on pressure piping and pass a qualification test. This certificate authorizes the holder to fabricate and repair boilers and pressure vessels and pressure piping systems. 

To obtain a Special Welder's Certificate, applicants must have two years of experience in the welding trade with at least one year of experience on pressure piping and pass a qualification test. This certificate authorizes the holder to fabricate and repair boilers, pressure vessels and pressure piping systems in accordance with special registered procedures.
