Overview
The Games of La Francophonie are held every four years and bring together participants from across La Francophonie. This event is the only major international game that presents both sports and cultural competitions. Visit the official website (French only) to know more about the games, results and upcoming updates.
Participation of New Brunswick
As a full member of the International Organization of La Francophonie, New Brunswick’s participation in the Francophonie Games is part of a well‑established tradition dating back to the creation of the Games. Since their inception, Canada, New Brunswick, and Quebec have each sent three distinct teams. This triple representation reflects both Canada’s and these two provinces’ commitment within Francophonie institutions, while also illustrating the historical, cultural, and identity-based importance they attribute to their Francophone roots.
Athletes are selected through a process determined by the provincial sport organizations based on each organization’s own criteria of excellence, while also respecting the process established by the Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie (CIJF). Artists, meanwhile, are chosen through provincial cultural competitions. The final selection of artists is made by an international jury appointed by the International Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie and supported by the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).
"Francophonie" does not necessarily mean "francophone." As with the Commonwealth Games, athletes and artists are selected to be a part of Team Canada-New Brunswick at the Games of La Francophonie based on their performance excellence, not their linguistic affiliation. This means there are athletes and artists whose first language is not French.
