Overview

The Games of La Francophonie are held every four years and bring together participants from across La Francophonie. This event is the only major international game that presents both sports and cultural competitions. Visit the official website (French only) to know more about the games, results and upcoming updates.

Participation of New Brunswick

Since the inception of the Games of La Francophonie, the Canadian delegation has consisted of three teams: Canada, Canada-New Brunswick and Canada-Quebec. This tripartite representation reflects the desire of Canada and these two provinces to participate in different aspects of La Francophonie. It also demonstrates the historical and traditional importance that Quebec and New Brunswick attach to their francophone roots.

Athletes are chosen according to a selection process determined by each provincial sport organization, based on excellence criteria specific to each association, while respecting the procedure established by the Comité international des Jeux de la Francophonie (CIJF). Artists are chosen through a provincial cultural competition. An international jury, appointed by the committee and supported by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), selects the final candidates.

"Francophonie" does not necessarily mean "francophone." As with the Commonwealth Games, athletes and artists are selected to be a part of Team Canada-New Brunswick at the Games of La Francophonie based on their performance excellence, not their linguistic affiliation. This means there are athletes and artists whose first language is not French.
