7115-006 Domain Names

Ensuring government domain names are managed securely and consistently.

Overview

Definitions

Domain name

A unique, human-readable address used to access websites on the internet (for example, “gnb.ca”). Domain names map to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and are part of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

Directive

Business units must not independently purchase, register, or renew domain names through external registrars or platforms. All domain names must be registered and renewed through Service New Brunswick using the approved provincial registrar.

Purpose

This directive ensures domain name governance supports a unified digital presence, safeguards government assets, and maintains the integrity of the Official Web Domain. It also helps mitigate security risks by centralizing domain management, reducing the likelihood of expired domains being lost, misused, or acquired by unauthorized parties.
